Sleep Is a Game…

by verdemama on October 4, 2010

…and we’re losing terribly at it. The only thing worse than having jet lag is having a toddler with jet lag. We’re still desperately trying to get our days and nights straightened out (and to get a decent night’s sleep so our brains are actually functional again).

In this pic, Orion is playing his new favorite game, “Nigh Nigh,” where he gets on the bed and demands to be covered in pillows, then laughs like a maniac while jumping up and down. Despite the name of the game, there’s no actual sleep involved.

We were constantly on the go in Prague, so much so that Orion would take his daytime naps in his stroller after passing out from sheer exhaustion. I would keep right on pushing him along, pounding the pavement as I took in every block of the city. We usually ended up getting to bed much later than his normal bedtime as well, so I think he’s gotten used to needing less sleep. (Excuse me while I go beat my head against the wall for letting this happen.)

Now that we’re back home, he seems to think sleep is optional. He didn’t take a nap today and it didn’t even faze him.

Last night was rough—he got up around 2am and was ready to party. I feel like tonight’s going to be better though. Please god, let it be better.

I’ll post some photos tomorrow. Pinky swear!

We’re Back!

by verdemama on October 3, 2010

Prague was absolutely amazing, but I need to catch up on some zzz’s before I can post a decent blog. Keep your fingers crossed that our lost luggage eventually makes its way back to us, and I’ll be back with a photo post soon!

Curly/Straight

by verdemama on September 20, 2010

Last week I had the opportunity to star in a curly hair makeover video for a popular beauty website. I didn’t necessarily think I needed a “makeover,” per se, but I thought it would be fun to temporarily change up my look for a day or so. After all, I’ve basically been sporting the same hairdo for the last three decades. I’m crazy like that.

When it comes to my hair, I’m pretty much the lowest maintenance person EVAR. I wash it, condition it and put some styling product in it. I don’t comb it, I don’t color it, I don’t blow it dry, and I certainly don’t flat iron it or anything else to take out its natural kinks. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t have the time or energy for that kind of mirror gazing. But it sure was kinda nice having someone else do it for me!

For this video they gave me a blowout, flat ironed my hair, and loaded on the makeup. Check it. (Video to come later.)

It was definitely a fun experience, but unless a team of makeup artists and hair stylists show up on my doorstep, it’s pretty unlikely you’ll see me like this again for a long while.

My hair caught whiff of some humidity the next day and—poof! (quite literally)—the curly hair was back.

Weekend Fun!

by verdemama on September 19, 2010

I mentioned in my last post that my new strategy with Orion is to basically fill his days with so much fun and excitement that he falls into bed exhausted each night and doesn’t wake up until an acceptable hour the next morning. (7am, preferably.) This weekend was no exception.

Saturday we went to the Huntington Botanical Gardens with some friends. The Huntington, if you’re unfamiliar, is an LA-area must-see, and it has a wonderful children’s garden with fun water features and other magical hands-on attractions for little munchkins. Orion and his buddy Emmett had a great time running around together. (Sadly I forgot my camera!)

Sunday we checked out a new-to-us place down in Irvine called Pretend City—a miniature version of our big grown-up world that included a beach, fire station, grocery store, farm, post office, restaurant and more. And, well, there were tons of cars and trucks there so obviously Orion was in heaven.

I highly recommend Pretend City if you’re in the Orange County area, but be prepared to deal with some chaos. It’s the kind of place were there will always be a few kids running around like wild animals without a parent in sight. (It’s even fun for kids who aren’t obsessed with cars, I swear!)

All in all, it was an amazing weekend. And now this week we have to prepare for our impending overseas voyage. If you don’t hear from me it’s because my cold weather clothing-packed suitcase has swallowed me whole.

Busy Busy

by verdemama on September 15, 2010

I’ve decided the only logical way to combat Orion’s aversion to sleeping is to keep him so nonstop busy, he has no option but to pass out from sheer contented exhaustion each night.

To that end, we’ve been playing with friends, attending parent/toddler yoga classes (Orion’s been a fan of downward dogging for a while already and now he’s added “Om” to his vocab), going to baby dance class, bicycling, running, chasing, and climbing everything in sight. Today we went to the LA Country Fair with mama and baby friends and we rode rides, hung out with farm animals (although Orion completely freaked out in the petting zoo… he’s not a fan of goats, apparently), and got sun baked and sleepy.

So far my plan is working—he slept through the night last night. (Although I’m sure by my putting this in writing I’m totally jinxing us for tonight…) More importantly, he’s happy and smiling again, so I’m hoping that means whatever it was that was cursing us has now passed.

Hurricane Orion

by verdemama on September 13, 2010

Hurricane Orion, in a rare moment of calm

My brain… has been eaten by zombies. It’s probably dangerous for me to write something in my current state of frazzled, red-eyed, semi-angry exhaustion, but I don’t want you all to forget about me. Sure, I’ll likely say something stupid, publish a few typos for the world to see, etc. but damn it, I’m blogging anyway.

In a nutshell, I haven’t been sleeping. Translation? Orion hasn’t been sleeping. He fights going down at night, he wakes up at 1am, ends up in our bed (pretty consistently for a while now… which I know is only making the problem worse). Then he gets up early, like 6am on a Sunday morning. This has been going on for a few days or weeks or something now. (Can’t keep track because my brain is so fried.)

Lack of sleep makes him moody, as you might imagine, but not moody enough that he might consider sleeping more so he’ll be in a better mood. I know if I’m moody and tired, I go to sleep. (I did in my previous life, anyway.) Toddlers don’t think like that though.

Instead, they act out. They tear through the house like a hurricane, pulling books off shelves, dishes off countertops, and emptying drawers. They dump a full glass of water on your bed, and pound on the stereo receiver when they specifically know they’re not allowed to touch it. They throw food on the floor at lunch, and they want what you’re eating and not what you made for them. They clock you in the face with a metal truck, leaving you wounded and bleeding, and don’t show an ounce of remorse. And that was all before 10am.

That’s what Orion did today, anyway. But he also said the word “helicopter” for the first time, so all is forgiven. Tomorrow’s going to be sooo much better, right?

Bweez

by verdemama on September 9, 2010

Bweez

—noun

1. small, edible fruits such as blackberries, raspberries and blueberries; 2. Orion’s latest food obsession

Also known sometimes as beebeez

A couple years ago I was out for a stroll in the seaside town we lived in at the time, when a man popped out of his front yard with a container plant in his hands and asked me if I wanted it. It was a blackberry plant he had pulled out of his jungle of a yard, and he was dying to rid his property of its tangled, thorny vines. I jumped on the opportunity, because a) I love plants, b) I love blackberries, and c) I had no idea that berry vines can take over your entire house (and your neighbor’s house, and neighbor’s neighbor’s house, etc.).

The blackberry plant lived in a container on our front porch until we bought our current house in early ’09, at which time it found a permanent home in our backyard (along with a couple other berry vines gifted to us). Now those vines have taken over the entire length of the wall on that side of the yard and are producing tons of fruit. Hello, awesome!

Orion is obsessed with eating the berries right off the vine. Every day he walks over to the berry wall and asks, “Bweez?” (or sometimes “beebeez”) and gets right down to business chowing down on the little fruits. He eats so many that they can’t ripen fast enough for his ravenous berry appetite.
